Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail Update Oct 2013
We’re often asked about the trail surface and how much of it is off road.At this time, around half of the trail is on road, a variety of road surfaces from gravel track to SK83. It’s estimated it will take another $2 million to fully finish the trail. The A2O trail has already received $2.75 million in taxpayers’ money. There are plenty of ideas for fundraising and it’s hoped that the project will be fully completed within 2 years. the trust intends to build it as the funding comes in. In reality, we know how long these thngs take and how long it’s taken to where we are now, with the governments money. 2 years is an optimistic timeline so we have our fingers crossed. In the meantime, the first 4 sections are off road, including 2 of our favourites:
1. Twizel to Lake Ohau Lodge (with or withut the helibike option!)
2. Lake Ohau Lodge to Omarama.
The 5th section from Omarama to Otematata is also currently undergoing construction and the section of trail from Chain Hills to Sailors Cutting is nearly complete. The shingle has been delivered and will be spread on the recently cut track soon. This will allow riders to stay off road when cycling around Lake Benmore. Stunning!
