More off-road sections rideable on the A2O
The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail continues to improve. Check out these photos of the latest section nearing completion, the top of the hill outside Omarama down through to Sailors Cutting at the side of Lake Benmore. Most of this section has been surfaced allowing riders to ride off-road from Omarama through to the bottom of the Otematata Saddle. The on-road section is then up and over the saddle until you turn off onto the much quieter Benmore Dam Road.

The cycle trail follows the edge of the lake within sight of the main road.
This section of trail ends at the lakeside by Sailors Cutting camp site. There’s a boat ramp and toilet there, time for a pit stop before carrying on the main road over the Otematata Saddle. Although on the main road, this next section of road has shallow bends and good views for car drivers so we give you 3 options on our tours:
- Ride on to the Benmore Dam,
- Get shuttled to the top of the saddle, or
- Get shuttled to Otematata.
